Tips for studying a PERSON in the Bible

Have you ever been reading somewhere in the Bible and thought,

Who is that person?

I know I have!  Or maybe you've heard a Bible teaching where a name is mentioned but you don't know much about them and you'd like to know more.

I've got some ideas for helping you!

It's called a CHARACTER STUDY!

Basically it's studying a person from the Bible!

Why would I want to do that? Can't I just read about them and that's enough? Sure!

You don't have to study people in depth, but you may find as you study that there are some things you didn't know!

I did this recently in my Esther Bible Study Journal.  In the first few chapters of Esther you meet SO.MANY.PEOPLE ... and it's not just Esther!

Here are a few questions I asked when studying some of the people in the book of Esther

❓*When did they live?
❓*Where did they live?
❓*Who were their family?
❓*What were they known for?
❓*Where are they talked about in the Bible?
❓*What are some key verses that seem to define them as a person?
❓*What were some of their strengths or weaknesses?

This last question is sometimes obvious, but also takes some thinking and analyzing on your own part!

You can ask ...

Did they have a relationship with God?
✨How were they described in the Bible?
✨How did they live their life?
✨Did they do good/evil?
✨Am I like this person?

Check out some of these examples from the book of Esther:

Not much is known about Esther beyond what is written in the book by her name, but we can learn about her character by digging deeper and doing some analysis.

You might realize this already, but AGAIN ... doing these kinds of studies gives us CONTEXT about the not only the people themselves, but about the book of Esther (or whatever book of the Bible you are reading!). Doing this can help you understand not only more about the person, but more about the LORD too!

*In this case with Esther, we see the kind of person Esther became as she grew and matured as Queen.  She wasn't perfect but she was willing!  And God worked through her willingness to not only redeem her but also her people, His people, the Jews!

Who would YOU want to learn more about in the Bible?
